5.07.2008 - Colchester Royal Sale Success - £444,634 Total
The Sale by Auction of the Collection of the Queen Mother's faithful butler - the late William Tallon who died last November - held at the Reeman Dansie auction house today has proved a great success with a number of bidding war surprises.
The Sale attracted a phenomenal amount of interest requiring Reeman Dansie to reprint the sale catalogue after only a couple of weeks. Attendance on the day was as expected, with over 400 turning up throughout the 10 ½ hour auction. However, the number of bidders far exceeded those attending with a further 400 registering bids in advance as well as all six telephone lines being fully occupied. Also, a first for this Essex auction house, there was live bidding via the internet as organised by the-saleroom.com. The organisation registered 194 potential bidders for the sale from all over the world with over 20 from the United States. At any one time during the day there was an average of 90 people online and 117 lots worth in total over £40,000 were sold this way.
Stephen Lansley, long-term legal adviser and friend of the deceased, who is the Executor of Tallon's Estate is delighted with the result:
"There was surprise in some circles that I had chosen Colchester and Reemans to hold this sale rather a London auction house. The reasoning behind this was that as Executor, I needed a considerable degree of liaison with the auctioneer over issues of provenance, and as Ellisons, the firm of solicitors in which I am a partner, is based in Colchester, there were significant benefits to selecting a local auction house. This made good sense, especially because we have an auction house of the quality of Reemans on our doorstep.
The success of this sale has more than justified my choice. The truth is, however, that with the combination of the fantastic forward publicity and the technological advancement of the internet and the ability to bid via a website, as well as the more commonly used phone lines, this auction could have taken place on the moon."
Those attending the event and the previews held on the Thursday and Friday, included a number of friends of the deceased, members of the royal household past and present, members of the public with a keen interest in the royal family and of course collectors from around the world.
The morning started at a brisk pace but it was soon evident that auctioneer James Grinter's target of completing 100 lots an hour was a little ambitious. The interest, particularly in the items of correspondence from the Royal Family, meant that the time spent on each lot exceeded expectation. Actual prices achieved for most of these letters were two or three times the estimate with those from Princess Diana attracting, as anticipated, a great deal of interest.
However, it was lot 96, a group of handwritten notes written to William by HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, which included the instructions, "I think that I will take two small bottles of Dubonnet and gin with me this morning in case it is needed", which caused the biggest intake of breadth, as it fetched £16,000 (sixteen thousand pounds) when the estimate was a mere £300 (three hundred pounds)
Other "surprises" in terms of exceeding estimates included:
1. The beautiful presentation silver box by Garrards, which is emblazoned with the Queen Mother's Royal Arms and inscribed 'For William Tallon on the occasion of his 65th birthday 12th November 2000 from Elizabeth R Clarence House', which had an estimate of £600-£1,000 but sold for £5,400 (five thousand four hundred pounds);
2. Lot 545, an oil of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother by Sir James Gunn, a reduced replica of the painting that was exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1945 and now hangs in Clarence House, which achieved the highest item price of the day at £30,000 (thirty thousand pounds)
3. Edward Seago's "Half Tide on the Orwell" which made £20,000 (twenty thousand pounds) against an estimate of £8,000
Also in the picture section there were works by Royal portrait painter Richard Stone and artist Roy Petley, both of whom were present on the day. Petley's 30 items sold well with several selling for three times their estimates.
The sale concluded at just after 8.30pm with all 700 lots sold. It had been anticipated that the sale would raise between £250,000 and £300,000. However, at the conclusion of the event, the total sales figure was £444,365 (Four hundred and forty four thousand, three hundred and sixty five pounds).

19.06.2008 - Ellisons Angels blazing a gruelling trail to help Oxfam stamp out poverty
Ellisons Angels, a team from Colchester, sponsored by local firm Ellisons and comprising a number of Ellisons' solicitors, is taking part in an epic challenge this summer to walk the equivalent of two and a half marathons in under 30 hours.
The team of four: Lisa Anderson, Ceri Rogers, Marsha Robinson and Megan Rogers , has been in training for several months for this fundraising event which was started by Gurkha soldiers in Hong Kong in 1981 as a training exercise to test endurance and encourage teamwork. It is now a global phenomenon with events held in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Japan as well as in the UK.
Trailwalker is one of the hardest team events in the world - requiring groups of four to cover a 100km course across the beautiful South Downs in less than 30 hours which means that most will have to walk on through the night. The teams must start together, stick together throughout the course and finish together.
Marsha Robinson said: "I am really excited to be taking part in Trailwalker this summer. It is a chance to take on a really tough challenge with a group of friends."
Lisa Anderson agreed: "We all need to work together to complete a gruelling course and at the same time raise money for two worthwhile causes. Our target is £2,000 and with Ellisons' sponsorship, we are very nearly there"
Ceri Rogers concluded: "We would like to smash the £2,000 target and we are hoping that with a little help from the people of Colchester we can do that."

13.06.2008 - ELLISONS' SENIOR PARTNER ON FOOTBALL LEAGUE'S BOARD

Colchester United director Peter Powell has been voted onto the Football League's board of directors.
Mr Powell (pictured far right) was confirmed as one of two League One representatives earlier this week at the League's AGM, which was held in Portugal.
He had previously been voted on by the rest of the division's teams, and the vote was ratified at the AGM.
Mr Powell takes up the position previously held by Nottingham Forest's Mark Arthur, who leaves after the Midlands club moved up into the Championship.
And it's not the first time the U's have held the League One position, with former chairman and now Life President Peter Heard having also been the League One representative.
Furthermore, it completes a strong East Anglian representation on the board, with Norwich and Ipswich also amongst its members.

11.06.2008 - ESTATE OF ROYAL BUTLER TO OFFER PERSONAL COLLECTION AT COLCHESTER AUCTION IN JULY
700 lots of Royal Family memorabilia includes personal letters from Princess Diana
An exceptional collection of Royal memorabilia collected over more than 50 years, many spent as Butler to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, is to be offered for sale by Reeman Dansie Auctioneers in Colchester on Saturday 5th July. The Essex auctioneers were appointed by Ellisons Solicitors, the Essex firm which is acting in the probate of the late William Tallon. Ellisons Partner Stephen Lansley was a long-term legal adviser of the deceased and is now Executor of his Estate.
William Tallon, who died last November, was an exceptional servant who joined the Royal Household at the age of fifteen in 1951 - fulfilling a childhood ambition. He worked his way up to become Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother's Steward and the Page of the Backstairs - an ancient title for butler which resulted in him affectionately known by the Public as 'Backstairs Billy'. He and his lifelong partner Reginald Wilcock, who was the under butler, were devoted to Her Majesty and she was to them. This special relationship is reflected by the range of items amassed by William over his fifty-one years in Royal Service. These include hundreds of Royal Christmas cards, letters, photograph albums, books, Royal Presentation gifts, pictures, sculptures, silver and objects of virtue, china, glassware and furniture totalling seven hundred lots.

01.05.2008 - It's official - PTL Solicitors has merged with Ellisons Solicitors
The merger of PTL Solicitors with Ellisons, announced last November, came into effect on 01 May 2008. The merged Firm, which operates under the name of Ellisons Solicitors, now has 17 Partners and a total staff of 122.
As a result of the merger, Ellisons has strengthened its position as one of the most prominent providers of legal services in Essex. To its existing offices at Colchester, Frinton on Sea and Dovercourt, it adds a second office in Colchester and a new office at Clacton on Sea, making the firm particularly pre-eminent on the Tendring peninsula. 20.1.2008 - Ellisons boosts Private Client team with specialist Daniel Ager
Daniel Ager has joined Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester from Birketts LLP in Ipswich. Daniel, an Assistant Solicitor, advises on Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and administration of estates. He is also a specialist in Inheritance Tax Planning through the use of Wills and Trusts.
Although Daniel is Ipswich born and bred, his decision to move career over the county border to Essex is not without a precedent. Before attending the College of Law in York, Daniel studied Philosophy at the University of Essex.
Daniel joins the Ellisons' Private Client team at a very opportune time. With the planned merger with PTL Solicitors in May 2008, Ellisons will have a greatly enhanced team providing services to the private client. All the combined Firm's offices - Colchester, Clacton, Frinton on Sea and Dovercourt - will have Private Client departments.
Daniel recognises the excellent timing for his arrival: "The merger announcement in November was most definitely a bonus in terms of joining Ellisons at this time. With a greater geographical reach of offices and better resourced teams, we can be even more accessible to our private clients in the whole East Anglian region. I look forward to being a vital part of this expansion strategy."

16.1.2008 - Ellisons - first to sign for Colchester United's new stadium suites
The new corporate membership packages for the new community stadium for the 2008/9 season were launched at a reception last night at Colchester United Football Club at Layer Road.
For the first time in the history of Colchester United history, the club is able to offer first class hospitality all the year round. A total of 24 boxes, with package prices ranging from £14,500 were presented for the coming season and a sensational thirteen were sold on the night.
But the very first to sign and to secure Box 11 was Guy Longhurst of Ellisons Solicitors:
"Ellisons and Colchester United enjoy a very special relationship. As the Club's solicitors we have been actively involved in the Cuckoo Farm project for many years and are delighted that the club and the town will soon have a wonderful new stadium. 6.12.2007 - The Colchester Scout Band – Winner of the Arts Award – Colchester Youth Awards 2007
Ellisons is proud to continue its support of the Youth Awards which is now in its third year, by sponsoring the Arts Award.
The winner this year was The Colchester Scout Band which is to celebrate its 30th birthday in 2008.
The band is no newcomer to the awards as they have in fact played at this awards ceremony for the past two years and gave a further impressive performance for the entertainment of those present in 2007!
The Band was the first non-military band to perform at the Menon Gate memorial at Ypres in Belgium and the youngsters have proved themselves worthy ambassadors for both the Scout movement and the Youth of Colchester. They have travelled and played throughout Europe, with the ages of members of the band ranging from 8 years of age and upwards.

Ellisons Solicitors is to merge with PTL Solicitors to become one of the most prominent providers of legal services in Essex. Ellisons has offices in Colchester, Frinton on Sea and Dovercourt ; PTL has offices in Colchester and Clacton.
Discussions, which have been on going for some weeks, came to fruition yesterday with the signing of an agreement between the two firms to combine their respective practices. The merged Firm, which will be known as Ellisons Solicitors, will have 18 Partners and approximately 40 other fee earners.
Ellisons' Senior Partner, Peter Powell, is delighted that an agreement has been reached so quickly: "When two firms enter into merger talks, it is all about testing out compatibility and identifying synergies. For an agreement to be reached so quickly confirms our initial instincts that PTL are a natural match for Ellisons and will complement and strengthen our existing practices. 15.08.2007 - Ceri Rogers and Kirsty Panton - Newly Qualified Solicitors at Ellisons
Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester is pleased to announce that both Ceri Rogers and Kirsty Panton have completed their training period at the Firm and are now qualified solicitors.
Kirsty advises on commercial property matters and is part of the team, led by partners Peter Powell, Guy Longhurst, Bryn Smart and Kevin Wilsher. Ceri primarily advises local businesses on employment issues, working with Employment Partner Jayne Scott, and on general commercial law under the direction of Corporate Commercial Head, Seamus Clifford.
Ceri joined Ellisons as a Trainee in 2005 following her graduation from Queen Mary University of London where she obtained a degree in Modern & Contemporary History before completing her Postgraduate Diploma in Law and the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law.
Kirsty joined in 2007 to complete her training period. Kirsty had graduated in law and completed her Legal Practice Course at Anglia Ruskin University.
Peter Powell is delighted that the two newly qualified lawyers are to remain with the firm:

26.07.2007 - West Mersea Yacht Club's Round Island Race 2007
- Ellisons Solicitors on board as new Sponsors
Local law firm, Ellisons Solicitors is this year's sponsor for the annual 'Round the Island' race, which will see dinghies and small boats of all shapes and sizes sailing around Mersea.
Well over a hundred boats are expected to circumnavigate the Island in this West Mersea Yacht Club organised race, which takes place on Wednesday the 15th August, mid-way through Mersea Week
Entries close on Wednesday 8th August, after which time competitors will be watching the weather in order to plan their strategies which importantly includes the option to choose which way round to sail. Crews decide at the last moment whether to go clockwise or anti-clockwise around the Island, crossing the Strood with the help of the friends, family and soldiers from MCTC in Colchester,
The big challenge for the serious contenders will be to beat the record set in 2002 by John Ready and his crew Courteney Woodward who circumnavigated the island in 56 minutes and 3 seconds in their Hurricane 5.9 catamaran. For the rest, the serious amateur, it promises to be a great day of family fun with a post-race barbeque and music adding to the carnival atmosphere.
Ellisons partner Seamus Clifford will be lining up among the competitors in his B14 fast dinghy. "This race is much more than a sailing club experience. It is an opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate this very special island on which we all live," he explained.
"Many of our Firm, including myself, live on the island, as do a number of our clients and so it seems natural for a local business such as Ellisons to support this focal event. Sailing round, or rather almost all the way round, emphasises our island identity and it is a privilege for Ellisons to have the opportunity to be associated with such an established community event."
More than 100 helpers are needed to make the Race possible, both on the water providing safety and support cover, and ashore running the racing and assisting at the Strood where traffic is disrupted as boats take precedence over cars. The organisers appreciate the patience of residents and visitors on this one day when you cannot escape acknowledging that Mersea is indeed an island.

7.06.2007 - Ellisons celebrate sponsorship with finalists of the University of Essex mooting competition
Ellisons Solicitors held a reception for the finalists, friends and supporters of the University of Essex mooting competition, at its Head Street offices in Colchester on the 7th June.
The winners of the competition, which took place on Friday 27th April were Dan Messenger and Bethan Onions. The two were presented with the shield and the new Ellisons cup, as well as a cash prize of £75.00 each, by Graeme Wallington, Partner and Head of Litigation at this leading Essex firm.
Runners up, Tomasz Hara and Alicja Szczesniak, received cash prizes, certificates and bottles of wine. Matthew Bennett and Jennifer Woodham, who came third received wine and certificates.
This was the first year that Ellisons Solicitors has supported the mooting team and partner Graeme Wallington is delighted with the results:
"As our local university, Essex is extremely important to the Firm. A number of our solicitors are Alumni and as more and more students attend university closer to home, we recognise that the Ellisons partners of the future are very likely to be University of Essex students of today and the years to come. Our aim with this sponsorship was to get more involved with the student body and to provide support greater than just financial. Not only has this objective been achieved but I have very much enjoyed judging the mooting events and observing for myself the skills and talents of these young advocates."

Ellisons Solicitors in Frinton on Sea is to double its office space in Connaught Avenue in acquiring the practice of Peter Leaman, just next door on the corner with Fourth Avenue.
Peter Leaman, a practising solicitor since 1954, who has been advising the residents of Frinton since 1964, has decided it is now time to retire.
As a sole practitioner, Peter has negotiated a handover of his practice to neighbouring Ellisons Solicitors. Peter Leaman Solicitors ceased operating on Monday 14th May when the Firm was formally incorporated with Ellisons.
"Ellisons was the ideal choice," explains Peter." Not only can they provide my clients with all the same services but by taking over the office, my clients don't even have to use a different front door. On a more serious note, however, having held a practice in the town for over forty years, it was important to me to be able to hand over the interests of my clients to a Firm I respect and trust. I believe I have found the right Firm in Ellisons and in particular in resident partner Nicky Coates and her team. I am confident that those who have entrusted me to look after their affairs will continue to enjoy a high level of personal service and legal proficiency from Ellisons"
Ellisons Partner Nicky Coates is excited by the new opportunities of this acquisition but recognises it will be a challenge:
"Peter is an established personality in Frinton and we appreciate that it is not a given that his clients will choose to use us. We hope, however, that they will give us the opportunity to prove ourselves to them and maybe even allow us to demonstrate some of the benefits of being a larger practice with a broader range of skills, particularly in relation to our Colchester office. It is planned to merge the two offices literally by knocking through from one building to the other, giving a total space of approximately 2000 square feet. All communication systems will be merged with immediate effect to provide a seamless handover to clients and contacts. The key services provided by the Frinton office, which reflect those provided by Peter Leaman, will continue to be Residential Property, Wills & Probate and Family. A wider range of services is available from solicitors based at Ellisons' main office in Colchester.

04.05.2007 - Promoted! Peter Powell is Ellisons' new senior partner as Firm announces new financial year promotions
Ellisons Solicitors is pleased to announce that Peter Powell is taking over the reins of Senior Partner from Bryn Smart, who steps down as partner but will continue to act for clients in the role of "Consultant" with the Colchester- based firm of solicitors. The Firm is also pleased to announce the promotion of Employment Law specialist Jayne Scott to Partner and Litigator Judith Winward to Associate.
New Senior Partner Peter Powell is a Commercial Property specialist and a prominent figure in the local community as a Director of local football team Colchester United and as one of the partners of Colchester2020, the Local Strategic Partnership for Colchester. As Peter takes up the challenge of Senior Partner for a second time, Kevin Wilsher takes over from him as Head of Commercial Property for the Firm.
Jayne Scott is pivotal to the Firm's Employment Law Department and has developed a strong reputation among both local and London based clients. She advises on all aspects of the fast moving area of employment law and also represents clients at Employment Tribunal.
Judith Winward started with the firm as a Trainee in 2000 following a first career in journalism with eight years at the Evening Gazette in Colchester before deciding to study law at Essex University. Judith specialises primarily in resolving civil and commercial disputes but is also a qualified Notary, only one of three in Colchester.
Peter Powell was happy to comment "I am delighted to take over the role of Senior Partner at such an exciting and buoyant time for the Firm. This year's promotions reflect the firm's success in attracting and choosing at entry level the right calibre and personality of individuals who can make it all the way to partnership. 10.04.2007 - Ellisons boosts Property team with Housing specialist Steven Harris
Steven Harris joins Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester as an Assistant Solicitor in the Commercial Property team. This is the second hire for the department this year as Tom McPhie joined in January.
Steven, who currently lives in Chelmsford, started his legal career at Swan Housing Association in Billericay where he worked for almost three years before joining a City based firm which is recognised as a leader in the field of social housing. Originally from the Midlands, Steven made his home in Essex after graduating from the University of Wolverhampton.
Steven specialises in Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) work, particularly site acquisitions and disposals but also advises on the broader aspects of both residential and commercial property. His expertise is a perfect fit for Ellisons' property client base which includes key local players in both social housing and housing development.
Guy Longhurst, Property Partner and one of the Firm's Managing Partners is delighted to welcome Steven to the team:

Ellisons advised the shareholders on the sale of Bastin Day Westley Limited ("BDW" or the "Company") to the AIM listed Mission Marketing Group Plc ("The Mission") for up to £14.5 million in cash and shares plus an additional cash payment, on a pound-for-pound basis, for tangible net assets at completion in excess of £1.05 million. Financing for the transaction was provided by the Royal Bank of Scotland.
BDW is one of the UK's leading specialist property and real estate marketing agencies. BDW offers creative, marketing, media and technical services to many of the UK largest house building and estate agency companies including St George, Bellway and Crest Nicholson. Recent work undertaken by BDW includes marketing of the development at 'The Stadium' - Arsenal's landmark residential development at Highbury, London and Bellways Park Royal development of the Guinness Brewery building. In the year ended 31 December 2006, BDW reported Profit Before Interest and Taxation of £1.19 million on revenues of £18.29 million. As at 31 December 2006 BDW had audited total net assets of £2.74m.

13.02.2007 - Five A Day - the Ellisons way!
Healthy eating is always on the agenda post Christmas festivities but local law firm Ellisons is doing its bit to help staff at their Colchester, Frinton and Dovercourt offices make their New Year resolutions last a little longer by providing free fresh fruit.
Luckily for Ellisons, they had the ideal supplier in client Fruit Works which delivers a box of seasonal items every Monday morning for distribution to the kitchens and the client reception.
The Ellisons partner behind the scheme is Edward Powell who said "We appreciate that this is not a new concept but it is a simple one. It is now pretty well the norm to provide hot beverages free in offices and this move is just a further small step to show that we care about our people." Alan Dearsley, the Firm's Office Manager agrees," Being busy sometimes means we don't have time to eat the right things. 08.01.2007 - Ellisons boosts Property team with Planning Lawyer Tom McPhie
Tom McPhie joins Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester, after spending nearly ten years in the Legal Services Department at Colchester Borough Council
Tom, who has lived in Colchester all his life, decided on law as a career relatively late in life when at the age of 30 he enrolled at Essex University. After graduating with a law degree, he started a training contract with the Borough Council and has been a valued member of the Council's legal team until joining Ellisons this week.
The former Borough Principal Solicitor specialises in advising on planning matters both contentious and non-contentious and his skills extend from general advice and drafting planning agreements to prosecution work. During his time at the Council, Tom has been involved in many local planning initiatives including advising on the Hythe regeneration area as well as many of the more recent Colchester renaissance projects.

22.12.2006 - Ellisons helps Braidwood touch down in New Zealand
Colchester Rugby Club 1st XV player Mark Braidwood sets off for New Zealand early January 2007 with a little help from local law firm Ellisons Solicitors.
The 20 year old from Colchester is pursuing an opportunity of a lifetime when he gives up his place on the Colchester squad and his job as a heating engineer with Turner May, to follow his dream to further his rugby career by heading for New Zealand and a new team in Napier, Hawkes Bay.
The Kiwi adventure is the result of a friendship formed with former team mate Shane Manning who played for Colchester for two years before returning home to New Zealand. Braidwood jumped at the opportunity to improve his rugby skills and enjoy an antipodean lifestyle when Manning proposed a return match down under. The decision was made even easier when 1st XV sponsors Ellisons Solicitors donated five hundred pounds to help the talented youngster on his way.
Mark Braidwood is very grateful for the financial support: "It is not just the money although I admit that does of course help. But knowing that a firm like Ellisons believes I have potential and is prepared to put its name and money to help me achieve my objectives, really gives me confidence."

The Awards were the inspiration of Dave Petrie and Matthew Young who had the support of former Colchester mayor Terry Sutton but current mayor Richard Gower was happy to have the baton passed to him as part of his mayoral role:

21.11.2006 - Ellisons Solicitors advises AUL shareholders in sale to Towergate Partnership
Local Colchester business - Agency Underwriting Limited (AUL) - has been acquired by Towergate Partnership as an addition to its Underwriting Division but will carry on operating from Colchester in Towergate's prestigious new offices at the Octagon Centre under the continued management of Richard Lamberth and his team of 50 staff.
Long term advisers to AUL, Ellisons Solicitors, acted for the three shareholders of AUL Holdings Limited on the deal which was completed earlier this month for the entire issued share capital.
Other advisers involved included accountants, Whittle & Co and tax advisors, Lake Bushells, all Colchester based.
Ellisons Corporate Partner Sally Hudson led the Ellisons legal team which involved Property Partner Kevin Wilsher and Employment specialist Jayne Scott.

1.10.2006 - Ellisons adds Roberts to Commercial Property Team
Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester is pleased to announce that Philip Roberts has completed his training period at the Firm and is now a qualified solicitor.
Philip joined Ellisons as a Trainee in 2004 following his graduation from the University of Coventry and completion of the Legal Practice Course.
He starts work as part of the Commercial Property team led by partners Bryn Smart, Peter Powell, Guy Longhurst and Kevin Wilsher.

16.07.2006 - Ellisons' Marsha starts the new job running
Ellisons Solicitors' new trainee solicitor Marsha Robinson has literally started her new job running.
Within two weeks of starting at the Firm's Colchester office, Marsha took part in the Race for Life on July 16th with all money raised going to Cancer Research
The race took place at the University of Essex where Marsha studied Politics & Sociology and a Masters in the Theory and Practice of Human Rights, before opting for a career in law.
Marsha ran the race in 36 minutes sporting her new Firm's logo in appreciation of Ellisons' agreement to sponsor her run even before she joined the Colchester based solicitors.
30.06.2006 - Ellisons Solicitors onside with Colchester United in taking tough stance on Parkinson contract
As World Cup fever grips the nation, one newly promoted club in the East of England fought a different battle, this time flying the flag of employment law.
As Colchester United Football Club's popular manager Phil Parkinson resigned and competitor league club Hull City poised to poach, the Directors and Management of the Club took the bold step of seeking a High Court injunction to ensure that all parties adhered to the correct protocol of terminating the manager's contract, which still had almost a year to run,
Advised by local Ellisons partner Graeme Wallington and Devereux Chambers, the club gained a temporary injunction on the 23rd June, clearly showing both Hull and their valued manager that they were serious and were prepared to fight for what was best for the club and its future.
Happily after almost a further week of negotiation a sum of in the region of £400,000compensation, plus the recovery of legal costs, has been agreed.
Ellisons partner Graeme Wallington explains the reason for the stance:
"Colchester United would have preferred Phil Parkinson to stay but appreciate that when you are"hot property", the offers are going to come in. But this stance was not about Phil Parkinson the person but Phil Parkinson the employee and the fundamental belief that even the football world has to take employment contracts seriously. We are delighted that the club has received significant compensation for the loss of their manager and that we have shown that employment and contract law applies as much to football as it does to any other business."
26.06.2006 - Corporate Lawyer, Seamus Clifford, comes home to Ellisons
Seamus Clifford, rejoins Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester, after spending six years in the Corporate department of London law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner.
Seamus, who trained and qualified with Ellisons, returns to the Firm to head up the Corporate Commercial team. He is the second partner in under a year to be recruited from a leading London law firm by this Essex based practice.
Seamus advises on a wide range of corporate matters including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, shareholder arrangements and corporate re-organisations. He has also played an active role in his previous firm's highly regarded multi-disciplinary Hotels and Leisure Group.
Guy Longhurst one of the Firm's Managing Partners is delighted to have his former colleague return:
"It has been one of the Firm's stated strategic objectives to attract more solicitors with London experience. 23.06.2006 - Local Lawyers first to sponsor Frinton's TV Stars Tennis Spectacular
Frinton Tennis Club and Big L radio 1395 welcomed an array of stars to play in the club's first Pro-Celebrity Tournament on Friday 23 June.

23.05.2006 - Lexden Saints (under 13s) wins league for third year running
Lexden Saints have won the Colchester and District Youth League (under 13s) for the third year running and were presented with their prize this evening after the final game of the season.
The team kicked off both tonight and on Saturday, happy in the knowledge that since the game against Maldon on 12 May, nothing could stop them from ending top of the league table.

1.05.2006 - Sally Hudson - Partner Promotion at Ellisons
Associate Sally Hudson has been promoted to partner at Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester with effect from 01 May 2006.
Announcing the promotion Senior Partner Bryn Smart said: "I am proud that Sally has achieved the status of partner. Seventeen years ago a bright local school girl asked the firm for some work experience and some years later in 1998 that same sparkling individual started at the Firm as a trainee solicitor, sharing my office. I think we can justifiably claim that our newest partner is home grown and I am delighted to have been in a position of mentor and guide to watch Sally develop and flourish over the many years she has been associated with the firm."
Sally specialises in all aspects of corporate and commercial work including issues relating to sole traders, partnerships and companies, from setting up in business to providing on-going advice and support. 17.03.2006 - Two New Acquisitions for Car Dealer Underwoods
As his car dealership business approaches its 25th anniversary this April, local businessman Gerry Wiggins has just acquired two new car dealership garages for his portfolio making the current number of Underwoods branded sites seven, with eleven franchises in total selling Vauxhall, Peugeot, Ford, Mazda, Skoda and Renault cars
This latest expansion involves two site acquisitions from the East of England Co-operative Society. The first, a further outlet in Colchester, formerly the Sterling Garage in Wimpole Road, operates as a Peugeot dealership. This purchase was completed on the 6th January 2006. The second, completed on 10th February was a purchase of another Sterling Garage in Cornard Road, Sudbury which represents Gerry's first foray out of Essex and into Suffolk. All employees have been retained and the Wimpole Road dealership has undergone a significant refurbishment, in spite of the intention to eventually relocate this business to the 2½ acre site on Ipswich Road.
Advising Gerry Wiggins on both these deals was Kevin Wilsher, a partner at Ellisons Solicitors. Kevin has worked with Gerry from the beginning.

04.03.2006 - New Notary at Ellisons makes two out of three in Colchester
Ellisons solicitor Judith Winward has just been granted a Notarial Faculty by the Archbishop of Canterbury, making her a Notary Public. Judith joins an ancient profession, which is essentially a third branch of the law (solicitors, barristers, notaries) whose authority to practise is given by the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, through the Court of Faculties (ecclesiastical court).
There are only three Notaries in Colchester and Ellisons Senior Partner Bryn Smart is not only one of the other two but with almost 20 years of practice he is also the longest qualified:
"I am thrilled that Judith has chosen and has succeeded to qualify as a Notary Public. There are only about 900 Notaries in the whole of England and Wales and Ellisons is very proud to share its office space with two of the three in Colchester. "
Bryn continues: "Notarial services continue to be in demand as more and more British have businesses, residences and family connections abroad. Many people are surprised to find because of the fundamental differences in legal systems between our own common law system and the civil law system which dominates the rest of Europe, that notaries abroad working on a transaction will not accept a Solicitor as a legal representative but will expect a Notary to be involved. So if you need to complete legal transactions such as overseas property purchases or just need to have your identity confirmed here to satisfy authorities abroad, then you will need to find a Notary"
Judith concurs: "The essential role of the English Notary is to verify the identity of the person appearing before him, ascertain that they have the authority to do what they say they want to do, and establish that they actually want to do what they are doing and are not being coerced in any way. Effectively, we assist a notary abroad to ensure that the transaction is not flawed, so we seek to ensure that whatever part of the transaction is carried out in England is done so in a form which will be accepted by the state in which the transaction is intended to take place."
It is a difficult route to become a Notary Public. With up to five years' study and no second chance if you fail, many start the course but few finish. But Judith has always been up to a challenge and managed to complete her qualification, by studying intensively, in just a year. Not surprising when you consider that her first career was in journalism with eight years at the Evening Gazette in Colchester before deciding to study law at Essex University. She joined Ellisons as a trainee in 2000 and now specialises primarily in resolving civil and commercial disputes.
Although both Bryn Smart and Judith Winward are solicitors at Ellisons, their respective Notarial practices are carried out totally independent of the Firm.
02.02.2006 - New Owners for leading local pharmacies
Scrutton Bland Accountants and Ellisons solicitors have advised pharmacist Nick Hunt, Director and Shareholder of NDH Enterprises Limited, on the acquisition of two established pharmacies - one in Sible Hedingham, Halstead and the other in Long Melford. Nick Hunt has been practising as a Pharmacist in East Anglia for over 25 years.
The deal which was closed today at Ellisons' Head Street Office saw Sheila Graham and her son Phillip, advised by Robin Burnett of Burnett Barker Solicitors, sell the two outlets developed by the late Gordon Graham to NDH Enterprises Limited.
Both businesses will continue to operate under the same trading name and all 22 employees have been retained by the new owners.
The Ellisons Solicitors team was led by Head of Corporate Commercial Max Harnden who was supported by Partner Bryn Smart on property issues and Associate Jayne Scott on employment matters. Scrutton Bland was represented by specialist Corporate Finance partners Andy Higginson and Andrew Strickland.
Andy Higginson states "Scrutton Bland is very pleased to have assisted the purchaser Nick Hunt in all the financial aspects of the transaction. We look forward to a continuing relationship with the business and helping Nick Hunt to make the most of an enterprising opportunity".

16.01.2006 - New Role at Ellisons as three are made Associates
Jayne Scott, Sally Hudson and Caroline Price have been promoted to the new position of "Associate" with Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester.
Announcing the promotions Senior Partner Bryn Smart explained: "The position of Associate is now becoming common in law firms as recognition for more senior solicitors and of their potential for progression to partnership. The new rank is intended to reflect the partners' appreciation of our most senior solicitors, to applaud their achievements to date and to recognise their potential for partnership. Unlike many other professional career structures, a solicitor has a significant number of years between qualification and attaining partnership. During this time they are busy gathering experience and expertise and developing a client base. The static title of "solicitor" does not accurately reflect this professional development. The title of Associate goes some way to denote these individuals' seniority and professional success and we look forward to making further such promotions in the years to come."
Each of the three specialises in key practice areas. Jayne Scott is pivotal to the Firm's Employment Law Department and has developed a strong reputation among both local and London based clients. She advises on all aspects of the fast moving area of employment law and also represents clients at Employment Tribunal. Sally Hudson advises on all aspects of corporate and commercial work including issues relating to sole traders, partnerships and companies, from setting up in business to providing on-going advice and support. She deals with all aspects of matrimonial law including divorce and negotiations in respect of financial arrangements. Young people who have overcome remarkable odds, carried out fantastic work for their community or been a tower of strength to others are to be recognized at the first ever Colchester Youth Awards.
A total of 11 awards will be presented at a special ceremony at Colchester Town Hall on Friday, November 11.
More than 100 young people have been nominated for the awards. Most of the nominees have a remarkable story to tell, like the teenage girl who was unable to take her GCSEs following the death of her only parent in a tragic accident.
The youngster became the legal guardian of her younger sister at the same time as taking, and completing, vocational courses and obtaining employment in the caring industry. She has also successfully secured accommodation for herself and her sister.
By the age of 10 another nominee had lost both her younger sister and mother to serious illnesses. She also had the task of helping her father beat depression following the tragic events. Despite all the trauma in her life the youngster has gone on to achieve at school and has become a huge inspiration to others.
Colchester Town Mayor Terry Sutton, who is patron of the awards, said: "The majority of young people are still branded as uncommunicative, anti-social yobs. We need a place to shout about their triumphs, their successes and their input into our borough.
"This is why Colchester Youth Awards have been created and its goal is to celebrate the achievements of young people across the borough. We all know at least one young person who does more, cares more and gives more and these awards recognize young people for their fantastic accomplishments."
The eleven categories for the awards are as follows:
- Volunteer
This award recognises the efforts of a young person who gives their time voluntarily for the benefit of others. This could be as part of a group (i.e. Scouts, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Youth Club etc.) or individually.
- Carer
This award will recognise a young person who has cared for someone else. This could be a family member or friend, maybe during an illness or injury, or possibly has helped someone else to get through a difficult time.
- Enterprise
Individuals or groups of young people can be nominated for this award. We are looking for enterprising ideas, either in business or in the community that show innovation or have provided a service that filled a gap in or enhanced provision.
- Educational Achievement
This award recognises effort that has led to better than expected educational achievement with a particular focus on young people who were under achieving or have to battle against difficult circumstances.
- Arts
This award is open to individuals or groups who have made an outstanding contribution to the arts. Applications would be welcome from the world of art including writers, artists, backstage crew etc.
- Sports Development
This award will go to a team or individual who has made exceptional progress in sport. Nominees do not have to be winners, but will have demonstrated great effort and commitment to reach certain goals.
- Health
This award will recognise the contribution made by an individual or group to promote good health among young people or someone who has been able to achieve their personal goals despite health problems.
- Citizenship
This award is open to groups or individuals that have demonstrated they are good citizens. This could be for regular activities or outstanding one-off contributions that have improved the understanding of young peoples issues either in a political, social or economic context.
- Youth Service
This award will recognise the contribution made by an individual or group to the work of the Youth Service in Colchester.
- Community Improvement
This award will encourage young people to make a difference to their community. Ideas for community projects will be assessed and the winner will receive £500 towards their project.
- Personal Journey
This award recognises the progress and achievement of an individual to overcome personal difficulties in their family, social, educational or work lives. It will be awarded to someone who has been able to retain control of their lives whilst experiencing difficult circumstances and situations.
This is the first time the Colchester Youth Awards have been staged and it is hoped the event will be held annually in the future.

Cool bubbly cava, enticing tapas and sultry sangria were savoured in the beautiful surroundings of the Minories Garden on one of the year's last "Summer" evenings, as over 50 members and guests networked and were entertained by the soulful sound of Spanish guitar music courtesy of talented Martin Plackett.
Arachne was delighted to have Kath Wood, Director of firstsite update them on progress of the new purpose-built visual art space for firstsite in Colchester's town centre, as well as talking generally about how business can support the arts in the area. Kath invited guests in from the garden to the gallery's specially appointed room displaying plans and progress of the new project

20.09.2005 - Colchester Divorce Lawyers Launch Alternative to Court
Eleven lawyers representing six local firms of solicitors officially launched the Colchester pod of Collaborative Family Lawyers last night with a presentation and drinks at the Minories Art Gallery.
To an audience of advisers including accountants and financial advisers, the presenters outlined the new collaborative approach which can now be offered as an alternative to the neutral stance of mediation or the more traditional adversarial court system.
All eleven lawyers have been specially trained to resolve divorce and relationship breakdowns in a collaborative manner.
The key elements of the collaborative approach which was first developed in North America during the 1990s are:
- The lawyers and their clients sign an agreement not to go to court. If either client then decides to go to court, both clients must seek new lawyers.
- All negotiations take place in front of the clients making the process more transparent and less bureaucratic in that written correspondence is actively discouraged.
- The clients set both the pace and scope of the negotiations giving them a greater sense of control. Issues are resolved by the parties with assistance from the lawyers.
- Other non-legal professionals are involved as required but as a party to the process rather than an individual.
The Colchester launch complements similar launches in Norwich (14th September); Ipswich (6th October) and Bury St Edmunds (18th October). There are almost 30 collaborative lawyers in these four regions with a further 35 in Cambridge where the process has already been launched. As a group, the lawyers are referring to themselves as CLEAR (Collaborative Lawyers East Anglia Region) and to reflect the spirit of collaboration will be marketing the service jointly via a website, soon to be set up www.clear.gb.com.

25.08.2005 - Ellisons' Gloria sleeps rough for London's homeless in HOPE Worldwide's "The Big Night Out"
The 3rd September will be a "Big Night Out" and one to remember for Gloria Murray, a legal secretary for the past twenty years in the Personal Injury department at Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester. For that is the night that the Colchester mother of two will be sleeping in a cardboard box at the Oak Hill Park in East Barnet, raising both money and awareness for the plight of London's homeless.
Gloria and her fellow fundraisers are being organised by HOPE Worldwide which through its Two Step programme, launched in January 1993, assists over 200 homeless people per year into private, permanent accommodation.
"I was aware of HOPE Worldwide's work through my church and through my daughter who acts as a volunteer with the organisation in South Africa. This particular initiative caught my attention as an opportunity not only to raise money for a good cause but to increase my and others' understanding of what it is to be homeless. I was shocked to learn that as many as one in ten people in England will experience homelessness at some point in their lives and the reasons for them finding themselves in this plight are wide ranging. I was particularly impressed by HOPE's approach to solving the longer term problems of the homeless, addressing the reasons why people find themselves on the streets and working with them to enable them to get back on their own two feet with dignity"
